On the lithium abundance dispersion in late-type Pleiades stars

چکیده

I present the results of a programme to monitor the strengths of the Li I 6708Å, K I 7699Å and chromospheric Hα lines in a group of cool Pleiades stars. Consistent instrumentation and analysis techniques are used to show that there is no Li I variability on timescales of 1 year that could possibly account for the apparent spread in Li abundances seen in Pleiades stars between effective temperatures of 4800-5200K. Comparison with published data reveals tentative evidence for variability on 10 year timescales, but at a very low level. The lack of chromospheric activity variability above levels of 20 to 30 percent makes it difficult however, to rule out evenly distributed magnetic activity regions causing a scatter in the Li I line strengths at a given abundance. The similar star to star scatter of K I line strengths in these and published data reinforces the conclusion that it is still unsafe to attribute the Li I line strength dispersion to a large variation in Li depletion at a given mass.

Lithium in Blanco 1: Implications for Stellar Mixing

We obtain lithium abundances for G and K stars in Blanco 1, an open cluster with an age similar to, or slightly younger than, the Pleiades. We critically examine previous spectroscopic abundance analyses of Blanco 1 and conclude that while there were flaws in earlier work, it is likely that Blanco 1 is close in overall metallicity to the older Hyades cluster and more metal-rich than the Pleiade...

Rotation and lithium in the late - type stars of NGC 2516

We present CCD photometry and high resolution spectroscopy of low-mass stars in the open cluster NGC 2516, which has an age of about 150 Myr and may have a much lower metallicity than the Pleiades. Twenty four probable F to early K type, single cluster members have been identiied from their photometry and radial velocities, along with three possible spectroscopic binaries. The projected equator...

Membership , metallicity and lithium abundances for solar - type stars in NGC 6633

We present spectroscopic observations of candidate F, G and K type stars in NGC 6633, an open cluster with a similar age to the Hyades. From the radial velocities and metal-line equivalent widths we identify 10 new cluster members including one short period binary system. Combining this survey with that of Jeffries (1997), we identify a total of 30 solar-type members. We have used the F and ear...

Spectroscopic Survey of G and K Dwarfs in the Hipparcos Catalog. I. Comparison between the Hipparcos and Photometric Parallaxes

The tension between the Hipparcos parallax of the Pleiades and other independent distance estimates continues even after the new reduction of the Hipparcos astrometric data and the development of a new geometric distance measurement for the cluster. A short Pleiades distance from the Hipparcos parallax predicts a number of stars in the solar neighborhood that are sub-luminous at a given photosp...

We have compiled a catalog of late-type stars (F5-M) member of representative young disk stellar kinematic groups: the Local Association (Pleiades moving group, 20-150 Myr), Ursa Mayor group (Sirius supercluster, 300 Myr), and Hyades supercluster (600 Myr). Other moving groups as IC 2391 supercluster (35 Myr) and Castor Moving Group (200 Myr) have been also included. Stars have been selected fr...
